Chapter 11

It’s been thirty minutes since Yvette and her team ambushed us and Trevor is not over it. We are seated in an eatery with a tray of fries and chicken breasts. Trevor refuses to touch his food. I understand that as a policeman, the incident grates his nerves, especially since he could not defend us or apprehend the thieves.

“Trevor, eat your food. It’ll make you feel better.”

“Hm!” He grabs one of the fries, bites off a chunk, and his frown deepens. “This doesn’t taste good.”

“Trevor!”

“What?” He shrugs. “I’ve had better.”

“The fries have done nothing to you!”

Trevor sighs. “You’re right.” He chews the rest and sips his water. “I’m just pissed. I haven’t gotten over what happened.”

I haven’t gotten over what happened either, but I’d rather eat than dwell on it. Anytime Yvette’s sweet, innocent face comes to mind, I get angry all over again.

“I can’t believe we let a teenager steal from us that way,” he says. “In retrospect, it was almost obvious. She’s an amateur.”

“I kind of feel bad for her,” I say. “She’s so young, and those men look bad. That’s not the best environment for her.”

Trevor thinks about it for a moment. “You’re right. She’s barely looks eighteen. Those men need to be arrested.”

“I agree.”

“I’m still mad though. I could easily have given her a few dollars if she asked me. It’s not a huge deal.”

I sigh and finish the rest of my meal. The sun is setting, and it’s getting dark, but we haven’t found anything yet. We started strong this morning, but gloom is beginning to set in.

“We should return to our hotel,” Trevor says. “I’m not in a great mood.”

I reach across the table to grab his hands. “It’ll be okay. Fortunately, we split the cash. You were so smart for that one.”

Trevor’s first real smile since the incident graces his face. “What would you do without me, Em?”

“Oh, my goodness.” I roll my eyes. “Can’t you say thank you and keep it moving?”

“Whatever.”

He relaxes into the chair and looks out the window while I sip the rest of my water. From the corner of my eyes, however, I look at him. There’s worry and anxiety in his gaze, and it saddens me. Just this morning, we were happy.

“Why did you come to my room last night?” The question falls from my lips, shocking Trevor as well as me. I hadn’t planned to bring it up.

Trevor lowers his eyes for a moment before catching mine again. “I told you I was lonely,” he says. “You don’t believe that.”

“No.” I giggle. “Okay, maybe a little. I believe you were lonely, but is that why? You’ve slept alone all your life.” I’m making it a big deal, but something has been swirling between Trevor and me since yesterday, and I want to know what it is.

“Well…” Trevor drums his fingers on the table, a tell-tale sign of his nerves. “I just wanted to be with you.”

His honesty causes the butterflies in my belly to take flight.
